This bench was commissioned by King’s College, Cambridge, with a brief to create a piece designed for reclining and stargazing. It was a particularly rewarding project, allowing me to draw on my steam-bending skills to develop an ergonomic, flowing form.
Using locally sourced, sustainable oak, Dylan constructed the bench with traditional mortice and tenon joints, secured with pegs to ensure they remain tight despite exposure to the elements. The steam-bent curves are central to both the design and the comfort, creating a surface that is naturally supportive and inviting to lie on.
To achieve the shape, he made two formers and steamed the oak planks for an hour, allowing the heat to penetrate and soften the fibres. Each plank was then quickly placed between the formers and clamped into position to set its new curve.
The bench is finished with tung oil, chosen for its durability and suitability for protecting wood outdoors.
Customers are encouraged to be involved in the design of their commissioned piece and also, where possible, to come to the workshop to choose their timber.
